Racial Trauma and Equity Training

The Racial Trauma and Equity Training section contains interactive trainings on trauma and resilience for educators, school administrators, and other professionals working with youth in schools or in community programs. 

The goal for these trainings is to build the skills of adults working with youth in recognizing race-based traumatic stress symptoms and advocating for equity.

Racial Trauma: The Consequences of Racism

Dr. Jernigan-Noesi is a licensed psychologist, professor, clinician-scientist, and CEO of Jernigan and Associates Psychological and Educational Consulting, LLC. Her expertise in racial stress and trauma and the investigation of experiences of racial discrimination as a social determinant of mental and physical health outcomes have been the focus of her consultation to numerous organizations and educational institutions.

During this online training, you will:

  • Explore the definition of racial trauma
  • Consider how you see racial trauma in your school
  • Plan steps to discuss and address racial trauma in your school

Racial Equity Series

This three-part series is designed specifically for educators and school administrators to improve school environments and curriculum.

The Equity Imperative, LLC. is organized to provide consulting services that illuminate inequities, indicate strategies, and navigate system-wide change. They work with practitioners at different levels of leadership within an organization who desire equitable outcomes through systematic change. They are former teachers, administrators, youth development and restorative justice experts with the mission to relentlessly secure opportunities for all, especially those who are marginalized.

Anti-Racism is Within our Reach

During this first of the three-part series, you will:

  • Build the vocabulary, the urgency, and the ability to discuss issues about race and racism.
  • Practice exploring new learning on important topics that can be uncomfortable.
  • Illustrate connections between Deficit Thinking and 21st Century racism in schools.
  • Identify how to mitigate unconscious bias so that relationships with students, families, and colleagues do not create racial trauma.
  • Name the ways that microaggressions can negatively influence interactions and change any of the ways current interactions cause microaggressions.
  • Begin designing systemic solutions as steps toward anti-racism.

This course is roughly 2 hours long

Racial Equity Module 2

Anti-Racist Instructional Moves Matter

During this second of the three-part series, you will:

  • Build the vocabulary, the urgency, and the ability to discuss issues about race and racism.
  • Practice exploring new learning on important topics that can be uncomfortable.
  • Celebrate some of the incredible work to address systemic inequality already happening in Massachusetts schools (with a spotlight on Lynn Public Schools).
  • Identify specific ways that systemic racism shows up in some of our most common routines, procedures, instructional practices, and assessment systems.
  • Design practical and tangible steps to mitigate and even eradicate the ways systemic racism shows up in schools.

This course is roughly 2 hours long

Racial Equity Module 3

Anti-Racism Through the Curriculum

During this third and final course of this three-part series, you will:

  • Build the vocabulary, the urgency, and the ability to discuss issues about race and racism.
  • Practice exploring new learning on important topics that can be uncomfortable.
  • Distinguish between culturally relevant, culturally responsive, and culturally sustaining pedagogies.
  • Articulate the ways that school and classroom curriculum racializes and disempowers students.
  • Design practical and tangible steps to mitigate and even eradicate the ways that school and classroom curriculum racializes and disempowers students.
