SUPPORTING NEW ARRIVAL STUDENTS:

An Online 3-Part Series for K-12 Educators

This three-part training series equips educators, administrators, and support staff with essential skills to welcome and support new arrival students and their families. Each interactive session focuses on fostering a sense of belonging, building effective communication, and addressing the social influencers of health and education that impact student well-being. Participants will gain practical, trauma-informed strategies to create inclusive, resource-rich school environments that promote resilience and positive outcomes for students and families transitioning into U.S. schools. Join us for these sessions and help create a supportive foundation for every new arrival student!

Recommended audience: superintendents, school administrators, K-12 teachers, and other school support staff including counselors, social workers, school-based interventionists, paraprofessionals, etc.

Dates: 2/6/25, 2/13/25, and 2/20/25 Time: 1:00-3:00 PM

Session 1: Nurturing a Culture of Belonging for New Arrival Students and Families

Focus: This session overviews a Foundational understanding of a Trauma Informed and Responsive approach to orienting New Arrival Students to new school environments while equipping staff with essential skills and strategies for supporting students both school-wide and within individual classrooms.

Outcome: Participants will understand the importance of a Trauma-informed and Responsive approach when welcoming and orienting new arrival students and families to their school environment. This training will prepare school staff to implement culturally affirming strategies effectively throughout the school year.

Session 2: Effective Communication Strategies for Strengthening Partnerships with New Arrival Students and Families

Focus: This session aims to equip participants with practical strategies for effective communication and collaboration with families, promoting student success and well-being in school, while incorporating best practices for language support.

Outcome: Participants will enhance their toolkit with practical skills and strategies to communicate effectively with new arrival students and their families, fostering a supportive network that extends beyond the classroom. This session will also provide strategies for creating academic and social support plans that inform the MTSS process.

Session 3: Understanding the Impact: Evaluating the Link Between Trauma and Social Influencers of Health and Education (SIHE)

Focus: This session will explore the interconnectedness of trauma and social influencers of health and education (SIHE). Both trauma and SIHE can have lasting effects on an individual’s physical, emotional, and cognitive well-being. By approaching trauma within the context of SIHE, we can understand the importance of a trauma-informed, holistic approach that integrates these social influencers into overall well-being.

Outcome: Participants will gain an understanding of how trauma interacts with social influencers of health and education. They will be equipped with strategies to foster trauma-informed, inclusive environments that address both SIHE and trauma, supporting resilience and positive outcomes for students’ health, learning, and emotional well-being.
